10th August 1918 off the coast of Malta: Eberhard Weichold, Captain of German submarine SM UC-22 ordered the launch of a torpedo that sealed the fate of French ocean liner SS Polynesien. SS Polynesien was carrying 500 recovered Serbian soldiers including Serbian national hero Milunka Savic, from Bizerta to Thessaloniki. After being torpedoed SS Polynesien headed for shore, however sank to the bottom, 62m below.

10th August 2025: Serbian Educational and Cultural Center Saint Helen of Anjou, Malta, unveiled a bronze memorial in memory of the sinking of SS Polynesien, which occurred 107 years previously.

The bronze memorial is situated on the coast in Marsaskala, pointing out to the wreck site. The memorial shows a ‘cut-out’ silhouette of SS Polynesien fully rigged above a 3d model of the wreck site.

3dMB Ltd were very proud to work with Petar Maksimović and Serbian Educational and Cultural Center Saint Helen of Anjou in the creation of this memorial, by supplying the wreck site 3d photogrammetry data that was used to remember the loss of SS Polynesien, and the 17 souls who went down with her.
